Yoga for Every Body

We live in a varied world of form. Every person you meet has a different unique body. Each human body, like my body, your body, is their vehicle, their suit. Lets for a moment expand out of the human form into the realm of animals, birds, insects, trees mountains, rocks or step even further into life forms beyond our earth. This universe is a gigantic mystery of diversity all pulsating in harmony. Lets hold that thought for a moment…

Now lets jump to the practice of modern Yoga. The media overwhelms us with images of hypermobile, or exceptionally strong men and women settling into postures a lot of people would consider impossible. The positive side to this physical obsession is that a lot of people have worked on them selves and developed a closer connection with their bodies. They have got healthier and stronger. The flipside is because magazines like to maintain a certain visual vocabulary most yoga or well-being related images tend to be like any other lifestyle spread. The model now sporting the hottest yoga pants is still the same stereotypical image we have seen in so many other adverts. The scenario has changed but we haven’t developed images to bring out the spirit of yoga.

Yoga is the universal life force that runs through everything. As a person begins the practice of yoga they begin a journey to still the superficial layers of body, mind, concept, ideas, emotions, likes, dislikes, personality to delve deeper within. Through the practice, getting in touch with this deeper connection that links everything. Our narrow perspective broadens. Then we live our lives differently as we change.

“Yoga does not just change the way we see things; it transforms the person who sees.” Guruji BKS Iyengar

Lets remember the reason why we took on the practice of Yoga. Lets honour and appreciate each body that we live in. It’s through this physical transient form that we can touch into the infinite within us.
